Rhetoric, Culture and the Self

Give some of your thoughts about how you describe your writing style and answer two of the following questions:
1.  How is writing affected by culture?
2.  What role does the self play in writing?
3. What role does race, gender, ethnicity, social status play in how we see the world?
4. Doe bias or discrimination still exist in American culture and society?

  1. I find that my writing is composed of argumentative and analytical stragtegies depending on what the topic is. I usually start my essays with a quote or question on the topic and go from there.
I find that on the rough drafts, I tend to ramble on mostly because I'm too into the topic and have too much say and have a hard time cutting pieces out because then to me the essay is incomplete.
    1) Writing is affected by culture because most authors' write about what they know, and the things they are familier with, like the culture and traditions they were raised with. It's something they are more or else experts in and writing about something they are not familier with would be crazy and sloppy.
    4) Bias and discrimination does still exists, you see it in the news pretty much everyday. After 9/11, Muslims were discriminated against and still are facing discrimination. Most people act like they are not racist but that's all that is, an act. When Muslims wanted to build the mosque near ground zero, the outrage that broke out is proof of this bias and discrimination that still exists. The issue with the Dream Act(the act is about legalizing kids who were brought into America by their parents illegally), the outrage this broke out is proof of Americans' intolerance and racist behavior. The bias against homosexuals; we have kids being bullied at schools day in and day out and these kids usually end up taking their own lives because they are led to believe something is wrong with them because nobody says so otherwise. Bias and discrimination will never go away, most people, no matter how good their acting skills are, will never truly accept someone that isn't like them or someone that doesn't have the same beliefs.
I would also like to say that I get my textbooks from CHEGG.COM; you can either buy or rent the book, its cheap, the condition is excellent even if it was used, and its delivered pretty quickly; I believe someone asked about where to get the textbook.

  2. My writing style is very simple and straight to the point, whatever my topic is I try to break it down give examples to support what I am saying and also I try not to ramble and repeat things because it only makes whoever is reading it bored and tired of seeing the samething over and over. I make sure everything is put in the format of how I would say it and not what someone else expects of me.
4)Yes bias and discrimination still exist in our society, whether it's culture(race)or gender for example: In the work place females are harrased just because of there sex and also male's would make more money then a female but we are suppose to be equal. Minorities are discriminated against everyday if you look at it the same crime commited by an african american or hispanic receives worst punisment then if it was commited by an white person, also they are represented different.
2)I think the role that self plays in writing is more of your own experience and what you have been through. everything is more from your point of view then actual facts.

  3. My style of writing pretty much depends on the topic. I can start with a question, an example or even a narration. Then from there I try to grab 2-3 important facts about the topic and write a paragraph explaining each.
1.Writing is affected by culture simply because the writer is usually going to write about what is familiar to them; the values and what they know about their society.
3.Race, gender, ethnicity and social status ALL play a part in how we see the world because each has their own stereotype. There’s different assumptions people make depending on their race, gender, ethnicity and social status even though they’re often wrong.

  4. my writing is very simple.i like to start with a quote, questions, or a narration.then i followed it by giving detailed paragraphs.
2.the self writing its personal, your thoughts and opinions.
    4. yes we are.during the centuries we have only learned to hide it better "put up a show". you can see proof of it everyday, in the news you hear all this chaos over immigration laws and how some people have been attacked or even killed because of racial profiling. i agree with Filiz when he says "people just got better at acting"

  5. My writing style varies depending on why I'm writing. If I'm writing an essay or a speech I try to convey my thoughts sounding professional. But if I have a writing assignment where I have to tell a story or something along those lines then I try to convey my thoughts in a manner that the reader can understand how I'm thinking. In other words "the voice in my head" the voice we all use when we are thinking. Since when ever I come across writing thats like that it interests me, i try to write like that.
    2) The role that self plays is to connect with your readers. When you leave yourself exposed on the paper through your words, people might read it and enjoy it because they might be happy that they aren't the only one who thinks that way. Often times its because in our own heads we might feel very self-conscious perhaps timid or even ashamed of letting our thoughts out. So i feel that self plays a very important part when writing.
    3) These different factors have a great impact on how we see the world. Depending on "what we are" regarding these factors would determine what we have been exposed to, and the goals we have, also the harsh treatment we may have received and from whom. These would effect our opinions and our decisions.

  6. I haven't had to write anything of substance for a long time, so I don't know what my wring style is. I want it to be one that is honest and direct. I want the reader to know that I cared not only about the topic, but also in the experience they had as readers.
What role does self play in writing?
I think the way self plays a role in writing is dependent on the type of writing is being done. A sports writer, or a news journalist, when writing to recreate what they've seen, has to try and keep self out of the writing. It's more about writing about what you saw without having any bias, or opinion one way or another.
That same sports writer, or journalist, when writing a commentary about what they saw, will interject much more of self into the writing. The writer will pick a side or have an opinion, and that slant will be based on self. So self is going to play a role in all writing. Either it's important to bring it into your writing, or it's just as important to leave it out.
What role does race, gender, ethnicity, social status play in how we see the world ?
Those factors play a very significant role in how as people we see the world. All of our life experiences, up until one moment, leads us to the next moment. Our view of the world is based on, are we a male or female. Are we rich or poor. Are we black or white and so on. All of those factors go into making us who we are, and who we are obviously who we are impacts how we see th world.

  7. 1. Writing is affected by culture because a person has a certain style of writing that depends on how they were taught to write. People have different persepectives and respects towards writing.Culture plays a big part.
2.Everyone is taught how to right differently. After being taught, its the persons decision if they choose to write a certain way
3.How people see the world is based on their environment and everything around them. It can include family and friends and how they feel on different races and ethnicities. It can be either positive or negative. However, it still is always a huge impact on how people see the world.
4.Bias and discrimination exist in so many different ways. People still get discriminated because of race and gender. It has an affect on how people get jobs and how their treated daily. It will always exist. Its just all depends on how much exists and hopefully it fades away and barely exists at all

  8. My style of writing would be relating things to my own life. I often compare things that have significance to me. I love writing about things I care about, also I enjoy writing about things I feel strongly about.
    3) All of those things mentioned classify each and every person in this world. We define ourselves by race, gender, ethnicity, and social status. If you a male you make more money, if your black you get money from the government, if your rich or high class you get special treatment. We see this all over the world and not just In America.
    4) Discrimination happens every day in both American culture and society. I see it in my own neighborhood. I see people joking around with it, and I also see people using it to directly affect someone. I see it on campus a lot. Many people discriminate against the location of Suffolk.

  9. My writing style largely depends on what i am writing about. When the work at hand is something that interests me, ill usually write the first thing that comes to my head. And continue the process sentence by sentence till the page is full. The end product will most likely resemble something very similar to how i would have tried to convey the discourse verbally. Occasionally ill get the opportunity to write about something that i truly believe in. In this case ill bare all soul and heart as if i am to present the finished work to the entire world. When working on this level i find that the rhetoric I am using is tailored to truth and not to make me seem uncommonly intelligent to the reader.

    2. What roll does the self play in writing?
Everything. Writing is used as a tool for purposes such as self expression, education, communication and even influence upon a small demographic or the masses. No matter which way a writer chooses to use this tool, it is still his tool to use. And whether its self expression in which the writer will enable creativity not limited by any external force. Or its used for influence, his self interests and beliefs will shape his brand of influence.

    4. Does bias discrimination still exist in American culture and society?
Of course these things exist. At the moment I am too tired to discuss the heavy topic in too much depth. But i will say one thing that sums most of my belief on the topic; i just wish people didn't see in colors or shapes. And just stopped all the people hate'n!!! Embrace diversity.

    see you in class

  10. 1. Everyone is brought up practicing customs of a certain culture. That culture may be different from that of the person sitting next to you in the classroom. Whether we are aware of it or not, culture is what defines and shapes us into the individuals that we are today. Therefore, our writing wrill reflect our perspectives.
    2. I believe that every piece of writing should be "real". By that, I don't necessarily mean nonfiction. I mean that the writer should write what he/she really means and feels. When one does that, the writing will reveal who he/she is.
    3. Factors such as race, gender, ethnicity, social status influence us. In fact, it is those factors that make us who we are. We gain and develop our perspective according to those factors. Since the same conditions don't apply to everybody, we're all going to look at the world a little differently.
    4. Discrimination most certainly is still prevalent in our society today. As discussed in class earlier today, there is always going to be discrimination, no matter what people declare and laws are passed. Unfortunately, it is in our nature to judge and treat different types of people differently.

  11. 1).Our writiing is affected by our culture through the way we were taught to speak and think. Many different cultures have different styles of writing and thinking due to how they were raised.
4). Discrimination still does exist in this world. There will be people in this world who think that there a certain race that there better then everyone else. We can't stop discrimination due to the fact that there will be people who will never change what they think.

  12. I never wrote anything before so, I don't know what my writing style is. If I have to write something I think I will be straight and direct.

Self play an important role in writing because your age, past experience, education, gender, location ect.. are the factors that could affect your writing.

Culture we defined as the share patterns of behaviors, collective programming of the mind. Your writing will affected by culture because it will be base an how your mind work.
