Profiles and The Writing Process

As you gather your notes and begin to assemble your "Profile" essays, I would like for you to be thinking about the writing process and how you go about generating ideas, and then putting those ideas into the essay format, and specifically this "Profile" format.  Here are some possible post ideas (and feel free to expand on more than one):

1. Share an experience of note-taking and how it corresponded or conflicted with your expectations for your essay.  Share an experience that spurred an idea or thought for you. How did you incorporate this knowledge into your ideas for your essay?
2. Tell us about your writing process: How do you generate essay ideas? How do you organize your ideas into a plan?  How do you start writing?  What difficulties do you have in the writing process?  What do you do when you feel like you can't write?
3. Give a synopsis of your idea for the essay and explain what you felt worked in trying to convey your idea and what did not.
4. Go into depth about a difficulty you faced during this essay anywhere in the writing process from start to finish and how you went about trying to fix it.

  1. For a piece like this where there needs to be a descriptive element about it, I usually brainstorm about my subject; I don't make a list though, I find that a list of words just confuses me, instead I just start writing about the different aspects of my topic and by the end of it I'll have a page or two of paragraphs and I compose my writing with those paragraphs, changing them to make the piece flow, or choosing to erase some because they don't fit.
The difficulty I had with this piece was actually the topic I had picked, I didn't get a chance to visit the place I was going to profile and I started to just write from my memory and a few pictures I had but this proved to be more difficult and writing about it became difficult because I didn't remember exactly what the color of the walls were or how it smelled or sounded and these are elements I want to include in my piece. So I had to make a quick decision to either go with my sloppy version or to pick a new topic and start new; I picked a new topic, a place I was close to and could visit that day and writing about this new topic proved to be more easy.

  2. My writing process is pretty simply i observe the subject take notes and i write down any questions i may need answered and throught out my visit i make sure they are answered before i leave and also get as much information as possible. The way i started my paper was with a small introduction not to direct but i give enough information to make you read on. My problem with this paper was that i didnt know how to strech out what i was trying to say in order for it to become this long paper but i did my best. I got to the point when i didnt know what to write anymore so i took a break and took my time to think about what i was tryig to say and then once the lightbulb came back on i started to write again. This paper was a little challenge but i gave it my best shot.

  4. The subject I chose to write about for my profile was relatively easy as I work in the field that the setting/plot was based on. My job did inspire the piece that I wrote. I am a meticulous individual so note taking is not a problem for me is I'm intrigued with detail. My writing process consists of me in a zone where I am directing and writing a movie. I get lost in the film sometimes and accept all forms of criticism positive or negative. I am a firm believer in that there is always room for perfection. Nothing is ever really perfect. I sometimes have writers block. When I am asleep my mind goes in so many places and creativity is as good as my sleep. Sometimes I wish I can just jump from my sleep and write down my thoughts or ideas and go back to sleep but the sleep wins that battle all the time. In my essay I tried to give a third-person view point from different angles to which I can further add detail.

  6. The problem I had with this profile essay was that I didn't know exactly what to write and how to write it. The peer conversation we had in class help me changed a few things now I have another point of view and how to write my essay.

  7. Specifically for the profile, I chose the topic I did because it was something I was going to attend to a few days later so I knew I was going to have a good insight. I wrote a few details of the place and other details on the event. I began it with a narration to catch the readers interest. The difficulties I had during the process was trying not to put too much detail that would confuse the reader or how to put in the detail well, so the reader could understand what I was trying to explain. When I feel like I can’t write, I take a break to refresh my mind and maybe come up with a few ideas.

  8. I chose a topic that i attended a few days ago and was no sure how to approach this essay but i kind of just went with the flow of it and being that i missed class it made it a little harder to write a profile essay

  9. At first i wasn't exactly sure what i was trying to convey about my topic other than a dry descriptive profile of it. My topic being the beach, was fairly easy for me to relate its concrete elements to the emotions I and others may feel when experiencing them. For example i took the beaches element of sand and related to the comfort of a human. Most take their shoes off when walking on sand because its soft and informal like carpet or their own back-yard-lawns in the summer. I tied all the elements together as a conclusion forming an overall emotion or feeling one gets from the beach.
I had some difficulty dragging my topic through three pages. Even though i chose my topic on something i am extremely familiar with. Ill admit that when this issue arose i tried to use as many descriptive words as possible to bulk up my sentences. But was that not that the point?
