What are your thoughts on the readings and discussions thus far?  Do you think there are multiple languages even within the English language?  How does one negotiate between languages they have already acquired, and learning academic and standard languages?  Is there a difference between "school" language and "home" language?  Do you have to unlearn "home" language to learn "school" language?

  1. There's more languages within the English language. Most people have different ways of talking or communicating with "slang". They use one word in place of another usually having some sort of relativity. There's also a "common ground" of language we use in the workplace and in school which is a more formal way of speaking rather than with friends or at home.

  2. In class we have discussed the differnt formats of the english language. We infact do have differnt types of ways of communicating with one another wheather in a school setting or a social setting. In school we tend to want to be more formal and educated when interacting with our proffesors. At home we have the ability to express ourselfs as we please.

  3. Yes there are multiple languages in the English language. For example some Caribbean countries, the way the pronounce their words, how fast they speak and when they talk its in dialect but they are still speaking English. There is a time and a place for certain language. In an academic or professional environment there is just a certain way or standard your supposed to talk in, compared to when your socializing with friends and family your feel more free. You don't have to unlearn a language to learn another.

  4. I agree with Grecia, people in a way speak different depending where they are and with who they are. For instance if we are in school we speak more formal, if we are at home we also tend to speak correctly in front of our family, but when we are with friends is a totally different language we speak.

  5. In my opinion I dont think that people should un learn the way they speak in order to please or be seen a certin way out of your comfort zone. For example, the way I speak and act stays the same where im at home work or school. I do believe there are different english languages. Not everybody is thought the same way. some people may even pronouns things differently but mean the same thing in the end like in other languages. for example, im dominican and when people that are born from a different spanish country tell me ahorita, to me that means later, to some it means right this moment.

  6. Yes I do think there are multiple language within the English language .there are many people from different places that speak English but words they use might not have the same meaning to some one else.school language is more appropriate and sophisticated where as home language we talk which ever maybe want .you do not need to unlearned home language when you go to school you just have to know when to use it

  7. I agree with William that there are more languages within the English language. By this I do not mean regional accents or dialects like a Southern twang but different meanings to the same words or phrases within the English language. On example of this is "Beat to his socks" in If Black English Isn't a Language, What Is? Where this term was used to describe the poverty inflicting America for some Black people. However its meaning was transformed into creating a new generation. This new generation, made up of mostly upper class, White America became known as the Beat Generation. That not only imitated poverty but used it to show how "hip" they were.

  8. I believe that there is multiple languages within the english language. There are many different people that use the english language in their own way beacause of there culture and living environment.I believe we get comfortable with what we believe is "English language(slang)" then we forget what is actually proper and acceptable in a work and\or school environment. We tend to speak slang at home or with friends. For instance, we use the word "word" to be inagreement with what that person is saying but we all know the word "word" is one or more spoken sounds carrying meaning and forming a basic unit speech(dictionary definition). We get so use to using "word" as a slang that when we go to work or school we continue to use it as a slang and we expect people to understand it and accept it.Some people wont. I believe that you do not need to unlearn "home" language to learn "school/work" language but i do believe there is a time and place to speak slang and work and school isn't one of them.

  9. In my opinion there are multiple languages within the english language. It's not just words, but the history behind it. The way a person was raised or a persons ethnicity. In class we've discussed a few good topics based on a language tone, reference and history behind the language itself. There is a major difference between school and home language. At school we speak properly/formal. At home many speak with comfort without worrying who or what to say next. Unlike school we take seriously and speak at out best.

  10. Yes i believe there are more languages within the English language such as the different dialects between people from the north and the south. There is a difference between our home language and our school language, at school we speak formal, but at home and with our friends we use slang. I do not believe you must unlearn your home language to learn your school language you just need to you are in the appropriate setting to use either your "slang" or your formal language

  11. Many people grow up learning different languages because of who we were raised by or simply where we grew up. There are multiple languages within the english language, one which we use at school and one which we use at home. We negotiate which one to use by what setting we are in, obviously in school we are expected to speak properly and use correct grammar. At home we can speak any way we want we can use slang and abbreviate as much as we want. You do not have to "unlearn" home language we just need to make sure that we are using the correct language when we are in school.

  12. yes there are many multiple languages among the English language. there are many different culturals, meanings, and beliefs that are within. one person may say same thing as another but there are many ways each other could mean and say with it. each person was raised in different settings and ways then another their speaking and meanings may mean something serious to another.yes there is a big differnce between "home" and "school" language.i dont believe one should change the way they are or speak for another. we as young ones have our own way of speaking "slang" when we with friends or loved ones, but in school grammer is really important.

  13. Im My opinion there are many different languages within the english language rather it be formal or non-formal. For Example: street talk " slang ". Cultural Backgrounds also have an impact on the english lauguage which can be a problem. Simple words which in the english lanuague may look the same but have different meaning for Eample the word (produce)and produce. Yes, "school" language and "home" language are different. Anyone can speak properly in school but when they go home, they can speak in defferent way. You do have to unlearn "home" language because it is not the right way of speaking and people are getting so use to speaking "home" language it makes it harder to speak properly again ("school" language).

  14. The readings and discussions thus far have been very interesting. There are many languages within the English language, throughout the years English has become very diverse. But thats what makes it interesting. For example "street slang" has been developed in almost every state in the United states, but even though it's still English not everyone would be able to understand. For example a person from New York trying to have a conversation using their version of street slang say with a person from Florida, would be a difficult task. Although they are both speaking english they each have developed their own ways and their own slang that unless you were directly from that area you would have trouble trying to understand.I believe there is a major difference in"home" language and "school" language and depending on where you are and what you are doing its your choice on which language you use.You can learn "school" language without unlearning "home" language, but Majority of people are so familiar with speaking "home" language it tends to come out even when their in an academic setting.

  15. My thoughts on the readings and discussions so far have given me what I would prefer as, the unexpected. Many of the readings show that the "Standard English" has been altered and modified by many different diverse cultures. It is very interesting when you think about it because when somebody speaks to you from where you live, what you just might understand may not be the same from the other person that lives somewhere else. In my personal opinion, I think there is a vast difference between "Home" and "School" Language, because when you are home you can talk to your family and friends the way you would want to talk to, while in a school that is not very possible. While unlearning "Home" language is not required for learning "school" language, many of us tend to speak like "home" because we are so used to speaking like this at home every single day.

  16. So far, the class readings and discussions are interesting. As interesting as they can be at 6:30 in the morning. I do think that there are various different languages in the English language. I don't think there is an issue of negotiating, but there is a time and place issue. There is a relaxed language ypu speak to family and friends with and then a professional or "standard" language you speak to professors...etc
There is a difference between home an school language but i do not think that its a major difference. At the most one is just a little more relaxed.

No, you do not have to unlearn one to learn the other... They are nor that different

  17. So, far the reading that we have done in class are very interesting. I don't think there are multiple languges in the English language. I think there is a difference between "school" language and "home" language. The language that I use at home and with my friends I dare not use in school around my professors. I don't think I have to unlearn my "home" language to learn my "school" language.

  19. Some of the reading are more complicated to understand then others, and the class discussions really help me understand. I do think there is many different languages within the English language because there is so many different types of people, who come from many different places. I feel like School language is more proper and persice then home language. At home your talking to your mom or dad not a Professer where it really matters. It depends where you come from if your home language is very profound and uneducatied then you might have to break that habit and "unlearn" your home language but in most cases you dont, you just need to be more proper and awear that your in a school seeting and not at home.
