Blog Post 3 - The Profile Essay

I would like for you to share a little about your experience so far with this essay.  What has the process been like?  Why did you choose the subject that you did?  Was it difficult to note-take? Was it difficult to put these ideas into an essay?  How did you come to decide on what your perspective was?

Also, check out this post "The Dangers of Thinking in Five Paragraphs" from a colleague of mine that also teaches composition? How does this relate to our discussion of good writing, and how we approach the writing process?  How does the purpose of writing change in different environments?  Why do you think you are often taught to write this way, and what limits/possibilities are there for this type of writing?

I know that's a lot to check out/write on... perhaps tackle one of these tasks in depth, or briefly hit on both in your post.

  1. I am writing my profile essay on a place I go to to escape from everything. I chose it because I wanted to write about my "safe place" and let others feel the peace I do when there. It wasn't difficult to note take because I didn't have to follow anything (a subject). But it was difficult to capture the detail and essence of the room in words so it could be explained to others. The wording in the essay was difficult to express to others what I experience. I wanted others to go through my experience in the room, so my perspective is through first point of view.

  2. I am writing my profile essay on a family friend who is a social worker. it was difficult for me to decide what i wanted to do because my original thought was to do a topic profile. I done about three rough drafts but noting seems o click with the idea I want to bring across. I think the note taking part was by far the only easy part to this essay. She openly answered any questions i had in dept. But putting eveerything into this essay and captivating the reader at the same time is proving difficult. At the end of the day I did decide I wanted my prespective to be in third person on the outside observing

  3. As for the "dangers of thinking in five paragraphs," I think that good writing should not be limited to five paragraph. The "bun" and "bottom bun" representing the intro and conclusion of an essay ma be ok but the three layers of meat can not possibly have much detail or creativity if its only limited to three paragraphs. When enviroments change writing change some writings are meant to be brief and descriptive while others are more about doing research and analyzing. It al depens on the topic, subject, and purpose of what your witing about. I think we are taught to write this way because the actual structure and layering of the burger is a good representation if how the writing should be set up however i think the three layers of meat might limit what can or would be written if a person feels that three paragraphs are all they need to make good writing.

  4. I find it somewhat difficult sincenthere is no exact format or outlinen for the essay. It's all narrative so there is no telling wether something is right or wrong in your eyes. I chose the person I did because she lives with me, and I've known her for a long time but never took the time out to really get to know her. It was a good experience getting to know her better. It wasn't difficult for me to get notes on her because we're comfortable sitting and talking to each other. The difficulty I findis actually putting allvthis information into an essay and making it all sound good. My perspective was based upon what I knew of Mari already and how I see her in my eyes as a person.

  5. "The dangersnof writing in fivenparagraphs" relates to our discussions of good writing because as we said before there are different forms of good writing and just because one person may write ascertain way we aren't all required to write in that same style. As a writer you shouldn't be limited on the amount you can write, although it's not the length of your writing that counts it's the strength. The purpose of writing changes based on who or what you're actually writing. There are different styles of writing, like letters and narrative or an essay in third person, things changed based your environment. Indo feel that the method of the five paragraphs is a good form on remember what an essay should resemble but once again your should not limited to how much you write.

  6. "The Dangers of Thinking in Five Paragraphs" shows me why us students were taught to write in this form. Its main purpose was to provide three supporting facts to back up your point. But this form of writing limits the writer and doesn't allow them to further explain and get really deep into the topic. We seegood writing as writting that is simple and straight to the point. Five paragraphs allows the writer to make it easier for the reader and give facts and examples without writing intresting but unnecessary information that isn't needed.

I've decided to profile a remote control, just because im sure everyone else would write about a person which would actually be easier. I feel that if i profiled an object instead of a person it would allow me to bemore creative. Since it will be a narrative piece. So far I'am writing about how people misplace the remote control. Im really trying to give life to the control and make it seem as if its expressing its self.

  7. The process has been very interesting. I choose this subject because it was something I observed recently. Note taking was not as difficult, as I thought. However, it was difficult to put these thoughts into an essay. I decided on my perspective by trying to wonder what I learned from observing my subject.

  8. The process of writing this paper started off being interesting and fun. I chose to profile Dave and Busters because it is a place I have been to many times and i enjoy it's entertainment. Profiling and taking notes on Dave and Busters was easy but once i had to put all of my ideas together it became difficult. I found that my perception of fun was just like those who attend Dave and Busters, enjoying time with others and finding entertainment and amusement in many activities such as games.

  9. The process for the essay seemed easy at first, but it was harder than I thought. I chose the subject I did because it brought back memories. I wasn't difficult to note-take, it was more of an observation and note-taking at the same time. It was harder to organize my ideas because it was a place and not a person. I found out that my perception was reflection and reminiscing my subject.

This relates to our discussion of good writing because the five paragraph essay is a method of keeping your thoughts organized, but it doesn't have to necessarily be just five paragraphs. The writing process needs to be coherent and organized to get the thesis or main idea across to the audience. This purpose of writing changes based on the topic, time period, and what it being written (essay, letter, etc). We are taught to write this way so you can make your point get across in an organized manner and assemble a proper essay. The five paragraph essay can limit the amount of detail depending on the topic, or it can get to clustered and deviate from the main point.

  10. Profiling someone has been interesting, it’s different to sit back for once and look how someone else views life and has gotten to the point where they are at now in their life. It’s also exciting to hear their perspectives on life and their life long goals because everyone is different and sometimes you think you know someone but you really don’t know till you ask. I chose to subject my boyfriend because I just met him over the summer and he’s not the average “teenage boy” he has a very good head on his shoulders and for a nineteen year old a lot of responsibility. He volunteers at the fire department, works hard at his job long hours Tues.-sat. And has the responsibility of paying bills as well. No I did not find it difficult to not-take I found it very entertaining and something different to do. Yes I believe some were difficult to put ideas into an essay, it’s a lot of rewording and arranging things in a way it will form a proper essay. I came to decide my perspective just by sitting back and thinking about life and watching others in their life and came to my own conclusions.

The dangers of writing in five paragraphs relates to our discussion of “good” writing because there are different types/styles of writing. And when someone writes a certain way doesn’t define who they are as a person. And the amount of what someone writes doesn’t count what counts is the details, descriptions and the interesting parts that make the piece a “good” writing. Writing needs to be organized in order for one to get their thoughts out. The five paragraphs essay limits the amount of details it can be disorganized from the main subject. But as we discussed in class, “good” writing should be something that the reader can understand, it’s organized and also entertaining, because people can read pieces of writing that aren’t entertaining at all.

  11. The essay was a bit hard for me to write I wrote it on my friend who went skydiving recently. I've never written an essay with dialogue and this style is just different to me. In all honesty I didn't like writing it very much I just can't get into essays like this and it was not one of my better essays.

  12. I really like this profile essay assignment. I find it easy because we got to choose a subject to write about. I'm writing about my job, coworkers, how the company is bankrupt and why not to shop at a supermarket (details of nasty food) and how the company affects how people work or take their job seriously. There's alot to say about this job and choosing a subject that we know about makes it simpler to write an essay with more details and information.

  13. I enjoyed this essay assignment. Initially, I thought how easy and quick this would be but I have found it just a bit challenging. Although there is a lot of information on my subject, it is hard because I do not want to generalize people and their experiences (in a homeless shelter). Especially since everyone has their own story.

  15. I wrote my essay on my job, and doing this essay has made me realize alot about the people i woke with.I never noticed certain tiicks people have and how people react to situations. i gess i never noticed because i was to into my job and never really thought about it untill we got assigned this essay to do.

The dangers of writing in five paragraphs relates to our discussion of “good” writing everyone writes a different way depending on how the person is and there personality. How much a person writes also depends on the details and how much attention the person pays to those details.Someones writing needs to be organized and have there ideas already planned out The five paragraphs essay limits the amount of details you can put into your writing, but as you know because we spoke about it in class. it depends on the person if its "good" writing or not. Everyone is different and ahs there own style/ type of writing when it comes to writing papers and essays.

  17. In “The Dangers of thinking in Five Paragraphs” I believe expresses that writing and listening is very important. The younger generation: is usually ignored or are told to “stay quiet” because they believe what the younger generation write is useless and/or pointless. Everyone’s opinion is important. If you’re trying to make a point a well written essay, letter or etc is a perfect way to get someone’s attention and have them understand you and your point of view.

My profile essay is about a location where I spent a good amount of time at. I believe it was easy to write because it was easy to explain the location in great details because the place has so much meaning to me.

  20. I thought this essay was a lot easier for me to write. I was happy that we got to pick our topic and could do it on whatever we wanted. I can usually write better when I have an interest in the topic the essay is about because it turns into fun to write the essay it is not like sitting there trying so hard to find things to put into the paper. I really enjoyed getting to write this paper.
