  1. Questions and Meaning

    2. The most people that buy these big vehicles are the women, statistics show that 40% of women buy these vehicles{mean while the men buy more bigger, tough pick up trucks) and the percentage is growing fast. These owners are afraid of the outside world, they described it "like a jungle". They think people are going to hurt them, so they need a big car like a tank to feel protected.

  2. Questions on Rhetorical strategy and Style

    1. The essay is written in exaggerated language for example, in the book says "what, then, explains the inexorable advance of these giant SUVs into our lives?" There's another example like " these are the new savages; people who drive cars. The scrape and fetch about in their tiny compacts, scuttling along on surface streets. But above it all, in their gleaming, skyscraping vehicles, is the new high society-the ambitious, the exurban pioneers, the downtown frontiersmen." These are some examples of the exaggerated language that they use in this essay.
The marketers and the focus groups come up with this language. The purpose for using humor on this essay is for not to sound that mean for what is being said and to acknowledge the weird names that are given to these suvs.

  3. Questions on Meaning

    1. You may have noticed that there is a lot of meaning to names, especially in cars and trucks. When you see big names like “Cherokee”, “Wrangler”, or “Chevrolet”. It gives a sense of something massive, adventurous and even protective. The reason why they give such adventurous names to SUV is because they are very big cars, that give you a sense of being “cool” or “protected” while being in a smaller car doesn't or may not make you feel the same way.

Question on Rhetorical Strategy and Style

    1. There is a handful of exaggerated language in this essay when it comes to talking about the cost of an SUV. With sentences like “...to one of the behemoths, which have bloated to such Brobdingnagian dimensions as to have entered the realm of the absurd”. It is obvious that the market comes up with such languages. In a way the way the sentence ends with “Brobdingnagian dimensions as to have entered the realm of the absurd” in fun of the over exaggerated names of the SUVs that are being sold

  4. question on meaning

2.The people that most buy suv are women. just like women use more vans then guys. these owners are afraid of what people might think of them. guys like to be very macho and have fast cars. unlike women they look for something that is safe.

question on retorical strategy and style

    3. the ending changes the tone on the essay beacuse it says they are scared of the underclass. that is not what they are stating in the begining of the essay. they are trying to make it seem as if women drive the smaller car which in this case is the suv compared to the truck that most men drive.

  5. 2.women are usually who buy the big suv and men buy big trucks to make them look tougher meanwhile women buy the suv for convenience and to feel more safe
2.I think. The introduction makes a reader think that a name of a vehicle doesn't mean much that it is just picked to get a man to be attracted to it

  6. Questions and Meaning #2

Both male and females are buying these vehicles because they need to fit in with society. Owners may be have some kind of shame because they don't have what is "in" at the time.

Questions on Rhetorical Strategy and Style #3

In the start of the essay it was more about names and reasons why people are driving SUV, towards the end after explaning G.Clotaire Rapaille research it was why people are driving SUV. Driving in an tanklike security SUV will make somebody feel better than the people outside because of their higher altitude.

  7. 1. Dealers name SUVs according to their appearance, quality and use like a truck, van or a sports suv. The larger the vehicle is the stronger the definition of it's name or the more quality and elegant the vehicle is the fancier it's name will be. 2. The appearance of a vehicle intimidates people by making others believe that you have power and money. It changes the tone of the essay because rather than purchasing an suv for it's quality and size people purchase large fancy SUVs for it's criticism on the appearance and money value from the society.

  8. Questions On Meaning
    1. SUV's, has such an important meaning. Names such as Durango, Pathfinder, Expedition, and Yukon come off as very masculine and intimidating names. American car dealers give these adventurous names to SUV's because consumers are attracted by these names and feel comfortable and makes them feel safer on the road. One example is GMC's Delhi. Delhi is an Alaskan Mountain.

Questions On Rhetorical Strategy & Style
    3. The ending change the tone because in the begining it explains how a name makes a car and how women are mostly buyers for SUV's and towards the end it throws you off because it ends with class, rich, poor and middle. It explains how people with SUV's have their way of explaining to the rest of the world This is my way of showing I have more money and I'm better than you.

  9. 1.Many SUVs are driven and owned by women. Mainly because ads were directed to appeal to women. The reason women own these big vehicles are simply because they are afraid of exiting the interstate for fear of what they may encounter on some surface streets. In their minds, the SUV gives them some sort of"tank like" security.

1.It changed the tone of the essay because it has absolutely nothing to do with it. Not everyone who is in the lower class or working class is a rapist or a psycho. Majority of the time it is the rich people or the well off people who are the creepers lurking in the bushes waiting fot the pretty blonde white girl to get home so he can play "peeping Tom and go seek". So if anyone should be intimidated or afraid, it should be the less fortunate.

  10. 2. Most SUV's are driven by women. They seem to be the new "mini-van" for the everyday woman. They seem to have a better status than the typical "soccer-mom" driving around in her van in the 90's and early 2000s. These vechiles have become more stylish and more practical than the "mini-van". In addition, the SUV's make a statement and provide that feeling of safety, that really anyone who would be driving would want.

  11. #2- I think women mostly are buying SUV's most mothers buy them because they don't want to be driving around in big not stylish mini van's they still want style even though they need more room and more safety features once having children. Women tend to look for cars with better gas mileage some style but mostly the safety features, men tend to go for speed and style.
